Carroll Henry Shotwell 1939-2013

 Carroll Henry Shotwell, 74, of Lexington, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at his home. He was born December 4, 1939 in Brookneal, Va., a son of the late John Henry Shotwell and Ada Puckett Shotwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, J. Ralph Shotwell; and a sister-in-law, Sue Shotwell. Mr. Shotwell graduated from the University of Richmond in 1962. He received his Master's of Education from UVA in 1970. A lifelong educator, he served as a teacher, coach, principal and central office administrator in several school divisions throughout Virginia. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Beverly Joy Shotwell; his children, Angela Sergent and husband, Randy, of Ellicott City, Md., David C. Shotwell of Washington, D.C., R. Brian Shotwell of Reston, Va.; three grandchildren, Julia, Olivia and J.C. Sergent; brothers, Malcolm G. Shotwell and wife, LaVerne, of Springfield, Illinois, Donald P. Shotwell of Brookneal, Va.; sister-in-law, Virginia Shotwell. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Manly Memorial Baptist Church, with the Dr. J. Michael Wilkins and Dr. Malcolm G. Shotwell officiating. Burial will be private. Family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the memory of Carroll to Manly Memorial Baptist Church, 202 South Main St., Lexington, Va. 24450, or to Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers St., Lexington, Va. 24450. Arrangements are being handled by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Va.

Robert Lee Conley 1930-2014

Robert Lee Conley, Jr., 83, of Charlottesville, passed away on Saturday morning, March 29, 2014 after a period of declining health.
He was born to Robert Lee Conley and Bertha Morris Conley on May 12, 1930 in Rapidan, VA.
Robert is survived by his wife, Joanne D. Conley; two sons, Bob and his wife Edie, and Barry; two granddaughters, Mary Beth and Meagan Conley; two sisters, Evelyn Conley and Gracie Dulaney; and several nieces and nephews.
After high school, Robert served with the U. S. Army's 45th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
Robert was employed by Anderson Brothers Bookstore on The Corner for the better part of three decades. He retired in 1986. He was a long standing member of the The First Presbyterian Church (Park Street). He was an avid (and sometimes frustrated) UVA sports fan and was fortunate to see the Hoos win the ACC basketball championship game recently.
Robert's greatest love in life was his family.

The family wishes to thank family friend Paul Jones for his tremendous help during the difficult times of the past few months.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2014 at The First Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson Disease Foundation or to the Phillips Cancer Center at the Martha Jefferson Hospital.

  • Haley Dawn Collier Haley Dawn Collier, 13, of Brightwood, went with the angels to be with Jesus on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, in Charlottesville. She was born on February 7, 2001, in Charlottesville. A rising 8th grader at Wetsel Middle School in Madison, Haley was our beautiful, loving, caring, sweet Angel. Her heart and soul was devoted to playing with her sisters on the field for "Blue Ridge Heat" Softball. Haley loved riding her horse Stitch, attending barrel races, hunting with her Daddy and enjoying her young life outdoors. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Warren E. Morgan; maternal great-grandfather, Reed "Buck" N. Fincham; maternal great-grandfather, W.C. Morgan Jr.; and paternal great-grandparents, Berman and Blanch Collier, and Joe and Robbie Jeffries. She is survived by her parents, Scott Hudson Collier and Nita Dawn Collier; her two brothers, Ryan Hudson Collier and Hunter Jacob Collier; maternal grandmother, Deborah Morgan; paternal grandparents, Amos Hudson Collier Jr. and Nancy J. Collier; maternal great-grandmother, Doris D. Fincham; maternal great-grandmother, Elsie Morgan; uncles, Thomas Morgan, wife, Kate, and their, daughter, Carlee, and Troy Collier, wife, Kelly, and their children, Erica, Austin and Dallas. Her Pops, Warren Lam and wife, Nikki; and "Uncles," Jamie Dawson and John Mulliniks. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison, conducted by Pastor Adam Meisberger with interment at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Reva. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 21, 2014, from 2 until 4 p.m. and from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
